Pisound / Pi 5 - what's the latest on enclosures and cooling

I’m considering getting a Raspberry Pi 5 and a Pisound board. What’s the latest word on enclosures and cooling? Note that I do not have access to a makerspace, so anything that requires 3D printing, soldering iron / fume hood, magnifying lamp, or tools beyond needle-nose pliers and screwdrivers is not useful to me.

@AlgoCompSynth welcome to the community!

As someone who owns a Pi5, Pisound and Pisound case, your best option for keeping the Pi cool is the official active cooler. It works perfectly with all the above as long as you have the latest version of Pisound and case.

OK … does all of that fit together? If there are spacers / standoffs required, are they included?

Yes, the Pisound case fits very nicely with the latest Pisound, Pi5, active cooler and case. I started off with the older Pisound and a Pi4. Last year I upgraded to a Pi5 with the new Pisound, active cooler and case. Love it!

Here’s a link to the page that shows how the Pisound case is assembled and it does come with all the required standoffs.

someone here made this 3d printable case for rpi5 and pisound… Pisound case Raspberry pi 5 by Jejeremy - Thingiverse

This 3D printed case seems to be done for older than v1.2 Pisound, where the active fan would not fit underneath the Pisound.

In v1.2 Pisound, we’ve changed the audio connectors to lower height ones. The horizontal position did not shift, but the vertical position changed a bit, so the 3D printed case design is probably incompatible with v1.2 Pisound without offseting the ports correctly.

Anyway, the Pisound Acrylic Case can fit both the Pisound v1.2, and the Raspberry Pi Active fan, retaining the same height as originally designed for the original Pisound.

Thanks for the clarification. I ordered your case. Please if possible send in same box w pisound card. I don’t need anything else.. like spacers ?

All the necessary parts are included with Pisound and the Acrylic Case to assemble it.

I printed it. I will update you when I will receive my Pisound and Rpi5

Keep in mind that the vertical position of the audio ports changed on Pisound’s v1.2 release, the 3D case model might be compatible with v1.0 and v1.1 Pisounds. We stock only v1.2 Pisounds right now.

OK, I’m pretty much ready to go here. So I order a Pisound and case from Blokas and a Pi5 and active cooler from somewhere else. Do I have this right?

  1. Mount the active cooler on the Pi board.
  2. Assemble the Pi board and Pisound.
  3. Put them in the case.

??

@AlgoCompSynth yep, you got it. Blokas doesn’t sell the Pi5 and active cooler so you will have to buy them somewhere else. The official raspberry pi site has a listing of sites to buy the Pi5 and active cooler:

Have we to compile something to make the fan spins?

@Black_Eyes if you’re taking about the official active fan, no. The pi takes care of that for you.

Just installed the active cooler from GeeekPi (Active Cooler for Raspberry Pi 5 - Armor Lite V5) but PiSound Jacks phisically stop the fan. Maybe I have to keep the PCB higher. Or do you think it would be better to use another Cooler?

I would certainly suggest the official active cooler from raspberry pi. That’s what Blokas used when they designed the newer Pisound and case.

From Drawing the Official one is 14mm height.

If you look at the official cooler drawing it’s 13.7mm for the fastener. So I would assume the height of the cooler is less than that. The drawing for the one above is 15mm. So it’s a bit higher than the official cooler.
