Magic smoke from Pisound rev4 2016

I just got one of these from Vinted, boxed and all - not sure it had ever been used. I see it says rev4, 2016, and looks a little different from the board I can see now I am looking closer at the current versions. Unfortunately, I went straight in and powered on via the Pi (Pi 3 B+) and poof, magic smoke from this C106 cap.

I am fairly confident in replacing this component, or giving it a try anyway, can anyone please help me out with what type of capacitor it is and the full spec I’m looking for in a replacement?

Also, what PSU do I need to find / what can I do to avoid this happening again, from what I gather, this happened because I didn’t power the Pisound directly?

Wow, what a flashback. :slight_smile: Unfortunately we can’t provide any support for this pre-release closed beta Pisound version. We’ve had 5 more revisions before it even reached the public v1.0 (v1.2 is the latest at the time of writing)

This revision was designed before 3B+ was released and it had a totally different power supply design, which was quickly deprecated.

For what it’s worth, the burned part in your photo is a 10uF 16V 1206 tantalum capacitor. However, if it burned, most likely there’s some other root cause issue elsewhere. I wouldn’t recommend using this version of the board, as it would be incompatible with Pi 4/5.

Thank you so much for replying. I didn’t know about the project until the Vinted listing, and since then I’ve been on a deep dive about what would be possible with this - so I am hooked now at least (and have Patchbox OS on the Pi now). At least I can scavange the I/O off the board maybe!
