Pisound w/ RPi4B not detected

Hello,

I am having a problem with my pisound, installed on a RPi4B running Buster Lite. Pisound-config complains it cannot detect the pisound. When I run

amidi -l
arecord -l
aplay -l

they all return no soundcard detected.
The installer doesn’t say anything about updating kernel.
I have tested my GPIO pins with gpiotest and they all work.
I have added “dtoverlay = pisound” in my config.txt and disabled all other “dtoverlay =”.
I have tried sudo dtoverlay pisound., this returns Failed to apply overlay '0_pisound' (kernel)
I have tried removing the spacers and fully connecting/ increasing pressure on the header side.

When running dmesg, there is no activity from pisound.

Hi, I don’t see any attempt to load the Pisound driver or to look for the device. It seems you are using a custom kernel build. Could you first try and see if Pisound gets recognized using a stock kernel?

This was using a custom kernel. I am a developer working with amjin on the project. I was able to install the pisound drivers, install a custom real time kernel and then continue to use the pisound on my raspberry pi but amjin is unable to do the same on theirs. We are using the raspi-5.10.110 with the real time patch. It seems like the issue is attached to the installation of the real time kernel but its surprising because I had no such issues. The device is detected before the real time kernel is installed but stops being detected for amjin after.

It seems there’s some issue in the custom kernel configuration then, make sure you’re both building it exactly the same way with the same config. If you’re using different versions of Raspberry Pi, keep in mind that there’s different ‘defconfigs’, you should apply your customizations to all of those.

We both followed the same procedure which is what confused us. I built the kernel we many weeks ago on a different raspberry pi running raspi os buster lite. Then everytime we need to install the kernel on a new pi we just copy the built files and install the kernel. The steps were install pisound drivers, install kernel, reboot. For me the pisound remains detected but for amjin it does not. I would understand that it were the kernel config if it didn’t work for me with the same steps. I am not sure what the issue is at this point. If you would like I can share the kernel that we are using. I will attempt a clean install for the pisound that amjin is using again in the meantime. The biggest variable in your case seems to be the custom kernel build, unfortunately it would take way too much time for us to help you debug your builds, due to the immense size of the kernel and how many small things can make it go wrong. :slight_smile:
