I have a brand new pisound and it isn’t being recognized by my pi 4 8GB. Here’s what I get way on down dmesg:

Hey, is this a ‘fresh’ OS install? It seems there’s some errors with registering audio cards in general as well to failure to communicate with Pisound via SPI.

Did you modify something on your system like /boot/config.txt or did some other changes that could have an impact? Maybe it’d make sense to back up the SD card and try on a newly installed OS (or just use a spare SD if you have one), just to rule out any unexpected/incompatible settings.

Another thing you could try is to mount Pisound directly on top of the Pi, without the standoffs, so there’s no pin contact issues.

Thanks for the quick reply. I have tried a fresh OS install–first with Patchbox, then Raspbian. Each time the same result. Then I modified the /boot/config.txt with dtoverlay=pisound at the bottom as I saw that as a solution for some from earlier posts. Nothing seems to work. Also, I took it out of the case and pressed it closer together.

Could you post the entire dmesg contents after booting up, without dtoverlay=pisound in the /boot/config.txt - this was necessary only for the initial beta test version of Pisound, further versions have the EEPROM chip that helps Raspberry Pi to identify Pisound.

Ok, thank you, it looks like the communication with Pisound via SPI is still failing.

Some more things to try could be:

Try it on another Raspberry Pi unit, if you have access to one.
Try a different power supply (but with Pi 4 and USB-C, we haven’t yet witnessed any problems caused by power supplies)
If you don’t have another Raspberry Pi, you could use a test script to verify its own GPIO pins are working fine.
Try reflashing the Pisound firmware - it’s done via SPI too, but it’d be interesting to see whether the firmware flashing program manages to communicate with the chip on Pisound.

Occasionally, there’s a chance there was some electrostatic discharge event during handling of Pisound, damaging the microcontroller on Pisound, in that case, you should send it back to us for a replacement unit.

Thanks for all of your help so far! So I tried my other Pi 4 and a USB-C different power supply–same issue.

I went through the steps to reflash the Pisound firmware and here’s what was produced:

Hey, looks like some changes were necessary to the flash.sh script for Raspberry Pi 4 - it’s been a while since anyone had to use it, sorry about that. I’ve fixed it up. Please try again, here’s how to get it updated:
