Hi would the Pisound micro be ok to use as a stand alone audio recorder, I can see another project that’s similar to what I need that uses the bigger version.

Yes, it can be used for a project like that. Where it excels is when you want to have a custom form factor for your device, like your own enclosure and audio ports layout. Otherwise, the bigger Pisound works out of the box. 
So it’s identical in performance to the bigger unit but I get the flexibility to add the parts to make what I need?
There are some performance differences, the bigger Pisound has 192kHz sampling rate support, while Pisound Micro goes up to 96kHz. This might not be a problem, as usually, for musical purposes, 48kHz is what gets used anyway. You can compare the detailed specs in the documentation of each device.
