MIDI is a good option for this, there’s a project here in the community that already implements executing desired scripts based on MIDI input:

Previously, in order to be able to shut down my Pi from the MODEP UI, I wrote a script to listen for a particular MIDI CC and value, then shut the host system down. You can find the Pisound button scripts located at /usr/local/pisound/scripts - you may simply trigger the desired scripts yourself.
