I did run x86 software through qemu for flashing an external ARM CPU connected via USB, but it was taking 3 minutes compared to around 15 seconds running roughly the same code, compiled natively for ARM, so in theory it would be possible to run x86 VST plugins, in practice you’d get a very slow offline effect processor.
You can use any LV2 plugins you find, as long as you put them in /usr/modep/lv2 folder, they won’t have a nice GUI, but you can still access all of the parameters through the plugin’s settings menu. MODEP already comes with all open source plugins that had nice GUIs available.

See Patchbox OS image 2020-03-14 (and MODEP) - #32 by edwillys - it seems to be some sort of bug in system libraries that was there when the image was generated, a software upgrade should fix it.
