Pisound not shown [SOLVED BY REPLACEMENT]

Hallo. I’ve just recevied my Pisound and plugged It to the GPIO of my Pi 3b+ running MODEP. aplay -l doesn’t list my Pisound but only the bcm2835 card. Have I to do something? The GPIO seems to work well when I plug a small 3.5" display and I tried the Pisound on to different Raspberry Pi 3b+. Modep works well with a focusrite Scarlett 2i4 USB card. Could my Pisound be faulty?
Thanx in Advance.

Hi, please attach the output of dmesg here, it may contain some useful errors to help troubleshoot the issue.

Please try slightly squeezing the boards together on the side of the pins and rebooting the system.

What is the power supply you are using?

Thanx you for your reply.

I squeezed the cards many times and rebooted but nothing changed.

The Power supply Is the original one from abox 5V 3A.

This Is the dmesg (really huge)

In the dmesg output I saw

6.543699] pisound: Searching for spi device…
[ 6.543712] pisound: Found!
[ 6.612167] pisound: Reading card info failed: -22

[ 6.612243] snd-rpi-pisound: probe of soc:sound failed with error -22

Looks like communication over SPI failed. This can happen either if there’s something up with your Pisound unit or the Raspberry Pi itself. There’s 2 things to try from this point:

  1. Reflashing the firmware of Pisound helped resolve a similar situation once. Steps for that are available here: GitHub - BlokasLabs/pisound-firmware: This repository contains firmware for Pisound boards.
  2. Try a different Raspberry Pi - even though the system works, some GPIO pins can get damaged and stop working properly. We’ve seen this happen ourselves multiple times for both SPI and I2C pins.

Are you using a custom kernel build? There’s been some issues previously with SPI communication with some custom kernel builds before. Is there anything else customized on your system (for example some changes in /boot/config.txt)

I tried 2 different Raspberries Pi 3 b+, the same issue. About the OS, i’ve just flashed the MODEP Image using etcher, no customizations neither overclocking. I’m gonna trying to reflash the firmware.

Well, after compiling the suggested customized version of avrdude, I reflashed the firmware following the easy-to-understand instructions. I couldn’t verify the success because a few seconds after launching the flash.sh script I was kicked off from the SSH session. At this moment the Pisound hotspot seems to be down, so I can’t access to my Raspberry. The led near the Power supply plug Is still green-flashing for several minutes.

EDIT: the led stopped flashing so i shutdowm the raspi then powered on again. The hotspot is on, I can SSH into the device but the issue Is still there. How can I check if reflashing firmware ran good?

Hmm, that’s weird, which image did you flash? The 2018-09-11 image comes with kernel version 4.14.59-rt37-v7+ and the top part of dmesg should say:

[ 0.000000] Linux version 4.14.59-rt37-v7+ (giedrius@giedrius-vb) (gcc version 4.8.3 20140303 (prerelease) (crosstool-NG linaro-1.13.1+bzr2650 - Linaro GCC 2014.03)) #1 SMP PREEMPT RT Fri Aug 17 14:53:46 EEST 2018

This means that the system likely crashed. I have tried the same flashing steps on my MODEP sd card, and it worked just fine, in case of MODEP, I had to run before running flash.sh:

sudo systemctl stop mod-ui
sudo systemctl stop mod-host
sudo systemctl stop jack

To unblock Pisound, but in your case those services shouldn’t be running due to not being able to find Pisound.

The expected ./flash.sh output is:

modep@modep:~/pisound-firmware $ ./flash.sh

avrdude done. Thank you.

Please try flashing either the 2018-09-11 MODEP image and retry, or regular Raspbian Lite / Desktop image and try and see if Pisound works with it, or if flashing succeeds.

Hi, thank you again for your patience and support.

I flashed the MODEP Image following this instructions

https://blokas.io/modep/docs/Burn-MODEP-Image/

however, I’ve just tried to flash the firmware on a new SD card running a fresh installation of Raspbian strech but It fault. This Is the output
